    About Discovery

    Partnerships

The Discovery Institute has been built on the foundation of partnership.

All of our programs stem from and contribute to the affiliation between the College of Staten Island and the teachers of New York City. In support of this crucial relationship, associations between the Discovery Institute and a variety of educational agencies have also been established.

Within the College, the Institute is able to partner with all academic departments, and our primary relationship is with the education department, through which we have been able to integrate Institute work with the formal education of teachers. This association is mutually beneficial: lessons learned through the Discovery Institute translate into changes within the department, while the department's strength in the theoretical underpinnings of education informs Institute practice.

Within the City University of New York, the Discovery Institute has developed formal alliances with the Office of Academic Affairs, the Center for Applied Studies in Education, and the doctoral program in urban education at the Graduate Center, as well as with other CUNY colleges. Most often, the Institute has been invited to work in the larger community to address specifically identified issues, and these invitations also provide a larger and more diverse context in which to apply concepts developed in our local programs. The feedback we receive from these projects is invaluable for the further development of projects and initiatives for the teachers and students of New York.

Locally, the Institute has fostered interaction with the administrative staffs of the K-12 schools on Staten Island and Brooklyn. Included are ten high schools, one middle school, and twelve elementary schools on Staten Island, as well as two Brooklyn high schools.

As all of the relationships mentioned above have grown, the Discovery Institute has also benefited from the support of local groups whose concerns include the education of New York City's youth, including:
