GEAR-UP Computer Boot Camp - Summer 2008
The Discovery Institute, through its GEAR-UP grant, hosted, with its partner, Dreyfus Intermediate School 49, this year’s Summer Computer Boot Camp. The program was attended by students in the 7th and 8th grades at IS 49 and by students who will enter IS 49’s 6th grade in September 2008. Students participated in scientific investigations, used various technological equipment, analyzed collected data, and did some technical writing. They also visited college classes, attended some college events, participated in an Academic Olympics and, in the process, had a great time!
Our expectations for students were high as we tried to promote early college preparation and awareness. Let me quote one of our 7th graders, who, when asked what he had learned about college that he had not known before this summer program, wrote, “If you want to go to college, it’s not a dream, it’s a plan.”
What follows is a compilation of unorthodox, unedited autobiographical sketches on which students worked diligently. Why unorthodox? The students were asked to write these autobiographies from an unusual perspective. They were scientists from a different planet who had been observing this earthling called “me” and this was their report back to their superiors.
Taken together, these autobiographies form a document as remarkable as the students who wrote them. We hope they give the reader a full indication of the quality of the students who participated in the Computer Boot Camp, Summer 2008.
