New Teacher Support
EDD 620
This course aims to help beginning elementary, middle and high school teachers in math, science, English and social studies deal with the day to day issues of curriculum development, the delivery of instruction, and classroom management. The course begins each week with a one-hour overview of a particular topic given by expert practitioners in the field. For the second two hours of the class, teachers meet in subject groups with mentor specialists to focus in-depth on lesson planning, content delivery, and discovery learning in the context of standards-based curriculum.
Mentoring
The Discovery Institute provides professional mentoring for beginning school teachers. Retired exemplary teachers visit the classrooms of novice teachers weekly. Each visit is followed by a conference in which they discuss issues of classroom management and techniques for developing engaging, discovery-oriented activities. The mentors also help new teachers to incorporate New York State Curriculum Standards into their lessons.
