Transition To Teaching (TTT) Program
***The Discovery Institute is no longer accepting applications for the Transition to Teaching program and will not be accepting applications until further notice. If you are interesting in applying for an alternative certification program, you may contact Diane Brescia in the College of Staten Island Education Department at (718) 982-3877 or visit the Education Department’s website for more information about their Graduate Education Sequence 2 programs.
The Discovery Institute's Transition to Teaching Program provides an alternative route to the receipt of New York State teaching certification. Through this program, exemplary recent college graduates or professionals choosing second careers as educators receive New York State Transition B Teaching Certification, and are eligible for full time teaching placements in the NYC Department of Education upon:
- Completing the Institute's 110-hour paid internship in a NYC Public School classroom
- Completing two graduate education courses offered through the Institute,
- Receiving qualifying scores on the LAST (Liberal Arts and Sciences Test) & CST (Content Specialty Test) (preparation provided)
- Enrolling in an approved M.S.Ed. program (application counseling and assistance provided)

The program also provides:
- Mentoring by a retired master teacher, 6 hours per week, for the first two years of teaching
- Partial tuition reimbursement for required graduate courses
- Job placement counseling and assistance

Receiving full NYS Certification after receiving Transition B Certification requires:
- Qualifying scores on the ATS-W (Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written) examination
- Completion of the M.S.Ed. degree above

Please note that participation in the Transition to Teaching program is limited to candidates who:
- Are United States citizens or Permanent Residents
- Hold a B.A. or B.S. from an accredited college or university in an area of mathematics, English, social studies, or the sciences
- Achieved a final cumulative undergraduate G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
- Reside or will reside in the NYC metropolitan area (the College does not provide housing)
